Tomorrow sees the release of John Powell's much anticipated score for The Bourne Ultimatum, the third installment in the popular Bourne franchise. Powell returns for his third consecutive score and as the series' sole composer now for three films, Powell has implemented a stylishly modern sound to the series that is unmistakable to any novice yet resonating to any movie score enthusiast.
John Powell was an experienced yet non-mainstream composer when he signed to score The Bourne Identity. While he jumped on the scene in 1997's Face/Off, creating a kinetically masterful effort, firmly establishing his roots in the vein of his mentor and teacher Hans Zimmer yet forging something new all-together, he strayed from the limelight, sparsely getting low-end, comedic projects. It wasn't until 2001's Bourne Identity that Powell finally was able to stretch his musical wings and since then has become a household name in the movie composer world, creating the scores for such high-profile projects as Ice Age, Ice Age: The Meltdown, Paycheck, X-Men: The Last Stand, Mr. & Mrs. Smith and of course his most acclaimed score to date, United 93.
As the purported last installment in the Bourne series, Powell has the daunting task of wrapping up the motifs and themes of his first two scores and cohesively and smartly crafting them into an exciting, new, yet all-the-while familiar score that complements his work on the first two films yet acts as a satisfying conclusion.
